The Hermitage became St Johns College when purchased by rev T Peters, a self made man. In earlier life it started as a night school at Alston. It became well known for training and ability. It was built in 1854, in 1873 Mr Peters purchased "The Hermitage." 
The school was fitted  to include airy classrooms, a large swimming pool, gym and football and cricket fields.
