Club Row is reputed to be recognised as the first Building Society in the UK. The cottages were built in pairs and the money was raised by a group of businessmen joining together to form a club to fund the building.

This was the old road to Clitheroe along which Cromwell was reputed to have marched from Stonyhurst to Preston for the battle in 1648.
