The entrance to the second floor of The Old Co-op where the dances were held can still be seen on Clarence Street. The red gate leads to red stone steps up to the first floor and wooden steps up to the second. It was local legend that the Bouncer of the Ballroom would throw you down these steps if you misbehaved at the ball. This rumour was a good deterrent and the theory never needed to be put into practice.
