George Whittle was born in Withnell in 1814 and came to Longridge in 1838 as a 'putter out' for merchants.  He became the master of a number of workshops in the local area and in 1850 he commenced building Stone Bridge Mill - the first steam powered weaving shed in Longridge. This laid the foundation for the future prosperity of the town and from 1850 until his death in 1865, there was never any lack of work at this mill.
